Bioacoustic recordings at the British Library National Sound Archive: new methods for storage and access [abstract]

Abstract:

With one of the world's largest collections of bioacoustic recordings, the British Library National Sound Archive is committed to improving current access to its holdings while ensuring they are securely preserved for the future. Until recently, recordings were archived onto magnetic tape, but recordable compact discs now offer better prospects for long term preservation, ease of access and subsequent transfer to other media. Data on many of the recordings are held on a specially tailored database. Our eventual aim is to make both the recordings and their catalogue data available on-line.
